A moment of thought….

Do you really think that the electromagnetic smog is not your problem? Let’s try to think for a while how many electrical and electronic devices are around you in your houses.

Bedrooms: mobile phone, tablet, laptop, chargers, PC, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, timer, radio receiver, Bluetooth headphone set, iron, electric pillows and blankets.

Living room: TV, DVD player, set-top box, surround sound speakers, TV remote, DVD player and decoder remotes, laptop, tablet, chargers, PC, wireless mouse and keyboard, printer, scanner, digital photo frame, wireless phone, router, video game console, radio receiver, vacuum cleaner, air-conditioner, power banks and wireless speakers.

Bathroom: electric toothbrush, hair dryer, electric razor, hair straightening, curling iron, epilator, digital scale, washing machine, clothes dryer, water heater

Kitchen: refrigerator, dishwasher, cooker, microwave, toaster, mixer, food processor, kitchen hood, coffee maker, water filtration system, blender, garbage disposal unit, freezer, electric kettle.

There is a total of about 60 devices in our homes! At least half of them is always running and emitting their own electromagnetic field. At least half of them is in constant operation at our neighbors. Such a wide collection of electric devices creates around us the electromagnetic smog that is harmful to our health…

Remember!
For proper operation, the cell surface need to be negatively charged! (-)

Allergy to digital world

People are living in the ocean of natural and unnatural electrical and magnetic fields. Every day, we are dealing with plenty of electromagnetic effects – the Earth pulsates with a frequency of about 10Hz, electric devices generate their own fields around them and our bodies are just other machines that are using electricity. Without the electric impulses sent by our brain, we would not be able to move any muscle or shape our thoughts.

Why does the modern electromagnetic radiation affect our bodies? Since the 19th century, when the Tesla’s invention caused a social and scientific revolution, we have been exposed to much more electromagnetic radiation than ever. Year by year, the number of devices emitting their own fields is even higher. There are not many places where we would be not exposed to these devices.

For the centuries, our bodies have adapter to the low energy of natural electromagnetic fields and the waves and frequencies they generate. They are playing positive and important role in the whole life on the Earth, especially for the animals. With their sensitivity to changes occurring in the electromagnetic field, they are able to predict some of the natural disasters. They also use the electromagnetic field when moving by choosing a specific direction of their migration. The ability to determine the direction of line of the earth magnetic field is the so-called magnetoreception that allows orientation in the field of many animals and formerly also the man. We know that small amounts of magnetite, the mineral belonging to the ferrite group, with magnetic properties, are located in our brain tissue, brain-blood barrier and in the bones over the eyes and at the sinuses. We are not able to determine clearly what is the effect of magnetite on the man. However, we know that there is a very narrow range of electromagnetic frequencies to which the brain cells of animals and humans respond positively. These are mainly frequencies generated naturally by the world in which we live.

We owe to the developing technology a huge advancement in the social and economic sphere. It is invaluable to the human, helps in daily life and allows for constant development. However, regular exposure to the electromagnetic radiation may toxically affect our body. Despite that we have an ability to neutralize certain harmful substances or chemicals used in the clothing and food industry, their excessive amount overstrains our immune system. It is similar when we are dealing with the electromagnetic smog, or the excessive radiation, that is generated by our mobile phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, routers, fridge, cookers, etc.

Bit of knowledge

Whenever there is electricity, the magnetic field is generated as well, hence we can say about electromagnetism. The language describing these phenomena may be difficult to understand due to the use of terminology from Physics. However, it is important to know certain definitions related to describing electric fields, magnetic fields and radio frequencies.

Electromagnetic waves – also known as electromagnetic radiation, are distortions of the electromagnetic field that propagate in the space. We are dealing with various types of electromagnetic waves and this radiation surrounds us even if only certain waves can be perceived by us.

Electric energy that is supplied to our houses is the alternating current, which means that is value is subject to temporary, repeated variation at certain frequency. These waves are usually showed as a sinusoid.

Wave length – is the smallest distance between the next wave points – that is its crests – therefore, it is the distance between the points being in the same vibration phase.

Wave frequency – is the number of full cycles of variation of the magnetic and electric field that occur in the given period. It is given in Hertz (Hz). In Europe, the frequency of the low-voltage line in houses is 50Hz.

What is interesting, our brain waves can also be measured in hertz. When we sleep, our brain functions with a frequency of 1 Hz. When we start to think intensively or act creatively, it speeds up to 40 Hz.

Gauss (G) – is a unit of measure regarding magnetic fields. Most scientists recommend today that the magnetic field of alternating current should be less than 1 mG (mili Gauss). Some researchers recommend it to be from 2 to 3 mG. The Earth magnetic field is about 0.5 mG.

Electromagnetic fields with extremely low frequency (ELF) are electromagnetic fields with a frequency of 3 to 30 Hz. Our electro power system and devices generate magnetic and electric fields with a frequency of about 50 Hz.

Radio waves (RF) – is another form of electromagnetic radiation. It includes waves with a frequency of 3kHz to 3THz. These are high frequency electromagnetic fields that are generated by devices that transmit wireless signals – transmission towers of radio and TV stations, cell network transmitters and mobile phones.

EMF – electromagnetic fields.

Why are we exposed?

Why are we so exposed to the risks from staying in the electromagnetic smog? Our body is composed in 75% from water so it conducts the current. Therefore, we are a type of antenna that draws energy from environment.

People have small protection against electromagnetic pollutions, much weaker than for the contact with toxic substances. Voltages of electric fields of low level generated by power devices and lines have a limited ability to permeate through the body. Cellular membranes only to some extent block their activity.

Our body absorbs energy of every electric field we are exposed to, even if the field is generated by the electric toothbrush or hair dryer – the accompanying field is completely absorbed and may sometimes be a threat. B. Blake Levitt, New York Times reporter, in its important book Electromagnetic fields: Consumer Problem Guide and how to protect yourself, claimed that it can interrupt our internal electromagnetic field and interact with magnetic metals in our body (iron and copper) and the charged blood cells.

Knowledge of electromagnetism – what is happening in your body?

Cellular transmission interruptions

The excessive electromagnetic radiation may in various ways interrupt electro-biochemical communication in our body, and thus, distort our immune system.

More receptors may appear on the cell surface. Receptors are a type of “input door” for the signals transferred by neurotransmitters. This allows the cells to access external data from the brain or other parts of the body. These receptors and neurotransmitters help to transfer data from one cell to another.

If homeostasis of our body is distorted, if we are sick or injured, we expect that our cells will send an emergency signal to our immune system to immediately begin treatment. If we are healthy, our cells are not sending such signals. Number of receptors on a cell surface is varying.

Excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields increases receptors on the cell surface which means that the cells become more sensitive and open to any types of data from our body and our environment. The body becomes overwhelmed with that amount of data and lack of balance leads to hyperactive body reactions. Our immune system receives too many false stimulants and is not able to react properly.

Recent studies showed that even low-power electromagnetic fields may break delicate cellular membranes, thus releasing calcium from the cells. It may also change a way in which the calcium ions (electrically charged atoms of calcium) bind with the membrane surface. Calcium ions are a glue that joins cell membranes. Excessive radiation to the cell membranes causes that they become weak and break up allowing toxins to enter the cell which also releases its contents. This will further cause cell pollution and formation of false neurochemical transmitters that will falsely inform the brain on sensing a pain, modify the taste or smell, cause headaches, tingling and numbing.

Too many calcium ions in the brain cells may also impair our ability to assess situation clearly – just as when driving a car. The British scientist, Andrew Goldsworthy, honorary lecturer at the Imperial College of London, suspects that higher number of accidents among users of cell phones has less in common with focus but more like a delayed reaction caused by brain cells flooded by calcium ions. The flood forms what he calls “a mental fog”.

DNA damage

Our bodies have an amazing defense system. Cell membranes provide protection against electromagnetic radiation and are able to self-regenerate. However, before a cell start this process, it can release an enzyme that will probably devastate or damage DNA, transforming genetic material into an onset of a disease. The guidelines stored in a cell regarding how and when to grow, divide and die are also modified.

Studies on the signal emitted from cell phones showed that it acts destructively on the cells. The Greek researchers analyzed the effect of electromagnetic fields on the example of drosophila. Using a sample made of its eggs, it was discovered that only a 6-minute exposure to the mobile phone signal for six days in a week killed the cellular material. Half of eggs used in the experiment died.

Electromagnetic fields are a threat to the cellular DNA in a different way as well. Scientific research showed that ELF accelerates partition and reproduction of cells. During the mitosis, a cell is divided, DNA is reproduced and chromosomes arrange in pairs and then break up forming a descendant cell. Exposing cells to ELF interrupts ordered process of adjustment and separation of chromosomes so that newly formed cells have no equal amounts of genetic data. This may lead to distortions of fertility and damage of the growing fetus.

Free radicals and Alzheimer disease

Henry Lai and Narendra P. Singh, from the Washington University discovered that under the alternating current of 50 Hz (typical for our houses), reproduction of free radials and fracture of cell DNA in the brains of rats occurred. Animals were under effect of the field for 24 to 48 hours. We are exposed to the radiation for the whole day, 7 days a week.

Fracture occurred because cell membranes became very stiff which prevented nutrients to enter inside. As a result, the delicate cell membrane was weakened so that it fractured letting toxins to enter inside and releasing fluids. Free radicals are considered the main cause of aging and such diseases like cancer or Alzheimer’s disease.

Science warns us!

Number of proofs for negative effect of electromagnetic fields on our health is constantly rising. In 1979, one of the first studies on the fields was published regarding the power lines. It was developed by two American researchers from Denver, Colorado, doctor Nancy Wertheimer and Physician, Ed Leeper.

According to the field studies of Wertheimer in Denver-Boulder, it was noted that the children who lived in houses located over the transformers reducing voltage were two times more exposed to the children cancer, especially leukemia and brain tumor. In 1986, a similar study conducted at the University of North Carolina confirmed this finding.

We can also find studies that challenged the relation of leukemia with the effect of electromagnetic fields. However, at least 30 new analyses were conducted that confirmed the results from 1979. New research was extended by monitoring effect of fields of hair dryers, household appliances, video games and microwave cookers.

The Dean of the School of Public Health at the State University of New York, David Carpenter believes that in about 30% of cases, the cause of cancers in children is the EMF. Development of a cancer does not require high electromagnetic radiation. Research showed that the risk was increased even if the children lived around the magnetic fields that were 1,000 lower than accepted safety limit established by the International Committee of Defense against Non-Ionizing Radiation.

Since the times of Leeper and Wertheimer, hundreds of studies showed that exposure to magnetic field may be related with different diseases, including Alzheimer, heart diseases, motor neuron disease, miscarriage, congenital defects, infertility and mood disorders such as depression.

Some experts note that our ageing electrical infrastructure is not able to keep up with the spreading technology. Its overload exposes us to the electromagnetic fields of high level in our homes, offices and schools. Overloads of electrical systems may cause different types of distortions of electromagnetic waves. They form a mixture known as the “dirty” electricity. The research suggests that it may affect our health causing headaches, allergies, fatigue, skin irritation and depressed mood. Certain irregularities may be noted in children. There are proofs that the “dirty” electricity may also raise blood sugar level in diabetics and impair signs in persons suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Exception that confirms the rule

Many scientists believe that electromagnetic fields and radio waves we are exposed to are completely safe. They believe that these are rather safe fields whose intensity is quickly reduced as we move away from their source. Many researches analyzing the same data did not present coherent results.

In the BioInitiative report from 2007, a group of 27 best international scientists called for further research on the effect of electromagnetic fields and their impact on our health. They believe that contrary studies should not be treated like something natural and an excuse to terminate research. According to them, if EMF has no significant impact on the human body, then using them as therapeutical tools would a fraud. Medicine has used electromagnetic fields for treatment for a long time. They are used for treatment of broken bones, scars, alleviating pain and depression.

Currently, the Israelian researchers are working on the use of low-intensity electromagnetic fields to slow down the partition of cancer cells, which would prevent their spread. So far, they have examined 10 persons with glioblastoma. Patients who underwent EMF therapy lived about 62 weeks longer than most of the patients who usually die in 12 months from being diagnosed.

Life with technology!

Some technologies are a clear and current threat. We can find hundreds of credible, independent studies that confirm this. It would be hard to resign completely from the comfort and facilities of the modern world. But here are ways to reduce negative effect of electromagnetic fields.

We realize ideally what are the benefits of using our devices that are responsible for generation of the electromagnetic smog. Therefore, balance and safe living with technology is so important.

Even if we get rid of any electrical gadget and device in our home, we will still be surrounded by them for many hours every day, spending time at work, in a car and public places like cafes, cinemas and shopping malls.

We do not need to resign from lighting, TV, wireless Internet, microwave cooker or a mobile phone if we are not exposed to long-term radiation. We should avoid overusing technology and use various forms of reducing its impact. We should preferably focus on the rooms where we spent most of our time: bedroom, living room and our workplace.

We regain most energy while we sleep so it is the time when our cells and tissues regenerate most intensively. While sleeping, we spent almost one third of our lives in the bed so the bedroom is one of the most important rooms that should be secured. Preferably, we should possibly place electronic equipment outside the bedroom. This regards mobile phones, TVs, radio receivers, electronic timers and heating pads and electric blankets. In some cases, it is recommended to disable electrical energy for the night in the bedroom. We should also make sure that our bed is arranged so that our head is not lying near an electrical socket.

Do not use laptops on your knees. It emits harmful electromagnetic field regardless of whether it is connected to the mains or not. For mobile phones, the closer we are to them, the stronger waves reach our brain and other organs. If we do not need to use a phone at the moment, we should enable the flight mode option. Pregnant women should especially be careful when it comes to the effect of mobile phones. Preferably, they should not keep them near their bodies and avoid using phones in cars, trains and elevators.

Elektrosmog reduces melatonin levels

It may take years for us to classify electromagnetic radiation as a confirmed carcinogen. This was the case with asbestos or cigarettes. WHO’s decision to include electrosmog in the list of potentially carcinogens has shown that appropriate caution should be exercised in everyday life.

We know that electrosmog can harm us, but we do not know exactly from what level it is dangerous for us. Many researchers suggest that current radiation limits are insufficient. Studies have shown a direct correlation between exposure to electromagnetic radiation and cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), depression, cell mutation, DNA damage, brain disorder, weakening of the immune system, allergies, chronic inflammation and reproductive function disorders. [1 ]

The electromagnetic field generated by our body has a power of about 100 millivolts. When we expose ourselves to the effects of artificially created fields, our body becomes disturbed and irritated. Therefore, to return to normal, he constantly loses energy.

The cell phone voltage is about 0.2 ampere and is therefore 50 billion times greater than the voltage generated by the human body. Artificial electromagnetic fields can very easily disrupt our body’s functioning – especially since every second our body makes about a billion electrical connections [2], which are responsible for the functioning of all organs, cellular reconstruction, digestion, etc.

It affects us

Elektrosmog affects the process of producing hormones that are necessary for the proper functioning of our immune system and circadian rhythm. Studies have shown that the electrosmog found in our bedrooms causes a reduction in melatonin levels in the body – in some cases by up to 50%.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland and is one of the hormones we need. Its production occurs only at night and is responsible for our sleep and relaxation. In addition, it strengthens the immune system and protects against free radicals. Deep sleep, the most regenerative for us, requires our brain to have frequencies in the range of 4 to 8 Hz. However, these frequencies are disturbed by artificial electromagnetic radiation.

Constantly low levels of melatonin increase the likelihood of cancer and can cause faster growth of existing tumors. Melatonin inhibits the growth of some cancer cells, strengthens the immune system and may reduce the likelihood of breast, ovarian and prostate cancers.

According to specialists, the field in the place where we sleep and rest should not exceed 5V / m in the case of an electric field, and 100Tn in the case of magnetic fields. However, in many households the limits are exceeded. [3]

In 2012, the results of research on the impact of exposure to very low-frequency electromagnetic fields on the sleep quality of high-voltage station employees in the Iranian city of Kerman and its suburbs were published. Kerman is the largest city in the southeast of Iran. Employees of these stations were more exposed to electromagnetic radiation than other people.

The electric and magnetic field strength was measured at various locations at the stations. 67 employees were examined, in the range of 24-57 years. The control group was 110 people aged 24-50. Using the special Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, sleep quality was assessed in both groups. Then, these data were subjected to statistical analysis. The results showed that 90.5% of employees and 85.3% of the control group rated their sleep as low-quality rest. Station employees took longer to fall asleep and their sleep time was shorter. [1]

Electromagnetic fields are created by electrical devices, power lines, electrical cables, transformers and electronic devices – so everyone can be exposed to them. Extremely low frequency fields are AC fields and non-ionizing radiation from 3 Hz to 300 Hz. One of the well-known sources of electromagnetic fields in the environment are power lines and stations, industrial machines and electrical devices. Many stations are close to residential areas, so both workers and people living in the neighborhood are exposed to the fields.

Sensitivity

Both animals and humans are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic fields can lead to rapid aging and have a significant impact on the metabolic system, including elevated blood glucose, elevated lipid levels, increased neuroregulatory immersion, decreased testosterone levels in men, and affect the central nervous system and immune system. In addition, they have an effect on increased blood pressure, heart rate and affect the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

It turns out that low frequency electromagnetic fields disturb our sleep. Researchers Asanova and Rakov were the first to address this. They noticed that exposure to electric and magnetic fields could have a detrimental effect on night sleep. Another scientist (Akorstedt) observed that exposure to magnetic field is associated with a significant reduction in the duration of slow-wave sleep. In 2009, it was discovered that fields can cause mental disorders, including sleep disorders. An increased risk of depression, paranoia, obsession, anxiety, hostility, phobia and psychosis has been observed.

Sleep is a complex biological process that is controlled by our nervous system. It is necessary for the proper functioning of every human body. There is a clear relationship between the amount and quality of our sleep and our functioning during the day. Our health and general well-being is also dependent on the sleep disorders we experience. According to researchers – Graham and Cook – intermittent exposure to electromagnetic fields can interfere with sleep. Research has shown that radiation is more harmful to us during the night than during the day. Poor quality of sleep makes us more irritable, increases tension, causes depression and generally lower life satisfaction. Sleeping less, we also live shorter. It is estimated that poor sleep quality reduces life expectancy from 80 to 64-70 years. Poor quality sleep is associated with many health problems.

The Babysafe Project

Many scientific studies pay particular attention to the possible harmful effect of wireless and electromagnetic radiation on pregnant women. Development of fetus is a delicate process that is subjected to various pathogenic environmental factors. Even small exposure of child to harmful factors may have serious and long-term consequences for its health.

From the initiative of Hugh Taylor and his research team from Yale University School of Medicine, a project was developed to examine the impact of electromagnetic and wireless radiation on people, especially children. Studies were conducted in midwifery, pediatrics and public health.

Scientists, pedagogists and doctors who took part in the studies were concerned about the risk of radiation of wireless devices for the pregnancy. The Babysafe Project was developed from their initiative. The Project is to inform the public, especially future mothers, on possible threats of exposing a child to radiation in its early age.

Protection of pregnant women and newly-born children is very important. Future mothers should limit the time they spent with devices emitting electromagnetic radiation and wireless signals. Mobile phones are considered especially harmful.
